Solomon Kane the movie

Good versus evil and a mans struggle against his past are the core elements of Solomon Kane the movie combined with intense sword combat.

Solomon Kane has spent most of his life as a mercenary in the 17th century seeking what ever fight, that would fill his pockets with gold. He is not used to loosing a battle and when defeat finally finds him in a bloody fight in North Africa he decides to put his violent life behind him and return home. The only problem is that he was banished as a young boy by his cruel father, because they did not see eye to eye and he did not approve of his older brother’s equally cruel ways. But his way back to a pious life is filled with obstacles and Solomon is eventually forced to pick up his swords once again, but this time in the name of good.

During his way back to the family castle Solomon Kane happens upon a poor family traveling across the country. He joins in their journey but it doesn’t take long before they are attacked by evil servants of some secretive power, whom no one really knows is behind. His new found travel companions are slaughtered except for the daughter, who the bandits kidnap. The girl’s father begs Solomon with his dying breath to find and rescue his daughter and this speaks directly to Solomon’s desire to fight this evil without regard for his own life as a means to make up for his own violent past.

Solomon Kane tracks the evil soldiers and picks up some of his own along the way and finally it becomes clear that the source of the evil is his own home – the castle from which his father ruled and his brother was supposed to take over. He must now not only find and free the kidnapped girl, but also  eliminate the evil that has beset the castle and restore peace to the land.

While many reviewers may not hold much regard for this movie it is excellent entertainment in my view. It has action, adventure and great stunts and effects and it is fiction. It is a fantasy adventure, it’s got decent actors and I for one don’t have to rely only on movies that make it to the cinemas to have a good time.
